Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water...

(If anyone besides [info]hazelnut3 gets what the subject has to do with this entry, I will be totally freakin' floored, I swear to God!  Because that will mean you have been reading my very warped little mind.)

I love my characters.  I really do.  When I think I've reached the end of my rope ... when I think I've squeezed every possible word out of a scene ... when I think I couldn't write more if it killed me ... when I think the block will go on forever ... that's when my characters start behaving like real people and start telling me things, if I'll just shut up my wibbling long enough to listen to what they have to say.

I've stared at the next incomplete chapter of "Though This Be Madness" many, many times over the past two weeks wondering what to write next.  "How am I going to get from having Snape outside Dumbledore's office to Snape learning about Occlumency?" I repeatedly asked myself.  But I had no answer.  Then I put the beginning aside and asked myself, "Well, if I can't write that, how am I going to get to Snape's reaction when Dumbledore makes James Head Boy?"  I still had no answer.  So I beat my head on the desk/keyboard/table and went about my life, hoping inspiration would strike.  It didn't.

Problem was, in each case I was asking the wrong person.  LOL!

As soon as shut my own oblivious mind up and listened, Snape told me how to get from outside Dumbledore's office to having him learn about Occlumency.  ("Tell them about the theory of Occlumency," he said.  "But I don't know anything about the theory of Occlumency," I said.  "That's why you have me, you dunderhead," he said.)  And Dumbledore told me how to get to Snape's reaction when he made James Head Boy.  ("The selection of prefects is a complicated process...")

God, I love my characters!  *cuddles them both madly*

Thank you!  I don't think most people realize what a big fan of "Ground Force" Snape really is.  I mean, all those nature walks around Hogwarts grounds and in the Forbidden Forest, not to mention taking serious offense to the damage Ron and Harry inflicted on the Whomping Willow.  Then again, maybe he just likes to play "Is Charlie wearing a bra today?" with the rest of us.  ;-)

I get it. You're gonna need a bigger boat to put all your fics in!

Or is it something to do with eating pretty girls?

LOL!  Both excellent guesses, but no.  It's more of a Finding Nemo-influenced explanation of how Occlumency works.  :-)

Well, seeing the movie isn't really necessary to understanding the idea (which was an analogy between a person's mind and the ocean).  It was just the inspiration.

don't you just love it when your characters help you out like that? *wink* also, just out of curiosity, how does finding nemo relate to occlumency? that was such a great movie!

*points to comment to [info]ballyharnon above*  Finding Nemo has absolutely nothing to do with Occlumency.  Not a thing.  But watching Finding Nemo recently (and Dory's memory problems) made me think of having schizo!Snape read a book on Occlumency that compares the mind to the ocean.  It's a long, drawn-out explanation, so I won't go into it here, but it'll be in the next chapter of "Though This Be Madness" — which will be coming soon to a beta filter near you.  ;-)

Does that mean you haven't been reading it so far?  I thought you'd been reading it along with all my other betas and just hadn't thought of any comments to make.  LOL!

Oh!  Umm ... okay ... *rummages to find links*  I'm glad I thought to add my beta posts to my memories!  LOL!

Though This Be Madness:
Part I: Descent
Part II: Dementia
Part III: Diagnosis
Part IV: Denial
Part V: Defences

I haven't had much time to work on the next chapter — the one with the Finding Nemo-influenced Occlumency — but hopefully I'll be able to get that one done sometime during my spring break.  Anyway ... Enjoy!

Either is fine, although I'd prefer that you post comments along with each individual chapter, if it's not too much trouble.  It's an organizational tool for me.  *blushes*
